Greater Pearl River Delta Infrastructure Outlook

APAC Major Report | May 2016

The Greater Pearl River Delta (GPRD) includes nine Pearl River Delta (PRD) cities in Guangdong Province: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Huizhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Jiangmen, and Zhaoqing, as well as two Special Administrative Regions: Hong Kong and Macau. It serves as the economic engine of Southern China, which holds a critical position in the national economy. The region is not only a key investment hub for Chinese capital, but it is also one of the five major megalopolises in the country.

Home to 5% of the country's entire population and taken up only 0.6% of its land mass, the GPRD accounts for one eighth of China' GDP. Compared with other independent nations, the GPRD's GDP would be ranked 13th in the world - larger than that of Australia. According to projections by the Chinese government, by 2020, the population of the GPRD will have grown to 81 million from 68 million in 2014, and the size of its economy will expand to USD 1.7 trillion dollars.
